Things to do
NEARBY
Just across the street from Paki Maui is a little strip mall where you can find great food, including The Fish Market, where they’ll prepare fresh fish in your choice of marinades or crusts and package it up for you to take home to bake or grill. Okazuya Deli has deli sandwiches, salads, and entrees like Kung Pao Chicken or Lemon Caper Mahi Mahi. In a pinch or for late night munchies, Pizza Hut is also right there.
Next to Paki Maui is the Honokowai Beach Park, with picnic tables, BBQ grills, swings, and restrooms. It’s a great place for a picnic and for playing in the sand right at the water’s edge.
Across the street from Honokowai Beach Park is another strip of shops worth a look. The Bad Ass Coffee Co. is perfect for a latte and newspaper in the morning. There’s also a Farmer’s Market in the parking lot with right-off-the tree fresh produce like guava, apple bananas, and pineapple. There’s another farmer’s market just a few blocks south of Paki Maui, close to the ABC Market. For more information on Farmer’s Markets in the area, check http://www.ams.usda.gov/farmersmarkets/States/Hawaii.htm.
For more shopping and restaurants, you can walk or drive to the Honokowai Market. There you can get groceries at Times Super Market, shop for shirts and souvenirs at several of the gift and apparel shops, and eat at a variety of restaurants: Pizza Paradiso, Java Jazz, Soup Nutz.
If you are looking for the classic Hawaiian mixed plate meal, then try Ono Kau Kau. Located just before the Honokawai market on the ocean side, this unassuming little mom and pop place offers a lot of good food at a low prices.
A LITTLE FARTHER
Maui offers plenty of opportunities for shopping, eating, and activities. There are four major shopping centers within easy driving distance:
Whalers Village (Ka’anapali) has both upscale shopping in Tommy Bahama and Blue Ginger, as well as more mainstream shops such as Crazy Shirts and Borders. There's a food court with favorites like Haagen-Dazs or McDonald's, or splurge a little at Leilani's on the Beach or the Hula Grill. Whalers Village also provides activities. Check out the weekly hula lessons or take in a Ploynesion Hula Show (check the calendar at the link above for the full schedule of activities).
The Lahaina Cannery Mall, connected to Safeway and Long's Drugs, is an indoor mall containing fairly standard mall fare with a slightly Hawaiian flavor: Crazy Shirts, Honolua Surf Company, Maui Toy Works, and a food court with Dairy Queen, Chopsticks Express, and Ba-Le French Sandwich & Bakery.
Across the street is a new shopping complex called Lahaina Gateway Mall with a Walgreen's, Maui Dive and Surf Shop, Outback Steakhouse, Melting Pot Fondue restaurant, and many other stores.
Just a few blocks away, Downtown Lahaina is full of galleries, apparel and gift shops – including Hilo Hattie’s – and restaurants like Lahaina Rib and Fish Company, Cheeseburger in Paradise, and Kimo’s. It's a great place to stroll to find gifts and take in the ocean. The marina in downtown Lahaina is also where many of the snorkel and whale-watching tours originate.
